WILL A KING BE CROWNED!!! (BigFoot’s Epsom Derby Tips)

Light up the BBQ it’s DERBY DAY!!

Today we may not have the numbers in our gardens of friends and family due to Covid but every year since I can remember this has always been the scene at Bigfoots house.

It’s a day like the Grand National when we come together to celebrate a day’s great racing and for all those pundits and tipsters that have been saying this is not a good renewal of the Derby I completely disagree ….you only need to look at the form lines.

ENGLISH KING who heads the market may be shorter in the betting but that’s only due to the Frankie factor, when we found out he would be taking over the ride from Tom Marquand. Take that Listed trial win at Lingfield that ENGLISH KING won in good style (BERKSHIRE ROCCO came second, who then went on to finish second at Royal Ascot to Santiago who then went on last week to win again in the IRISH DERBY!!!)

There will be plenty to consider with my selection for the Derby today and the Oaks with great prospects in FRANKLY DARLING and LOVE. Today will show who can prove the best in a true test of stamina over the undulating camber of what I believe to be the world’s most unique race course.

Only five go to post in the opener on today’s card in the Woodcote Stakes, TWAASOL showed a good display at Windsor backed up by the clock which was impressive on his first start. There should be strong market support and should he handle the track the Owen Burrows runner should get of to flyer.

Selection… TWAASOL 2/1

A chance is taken here on OH THIS IS US. The Hannon trained seven year old has a long time between drinks but if there is a strong pace set early this could just set it up for him and although those wins are few and far between he is a very consistent performer with course form in the book and only 1lb higher than his last winning mark.

Selection… OH THIS IS US e/w 8/1

A tentative vote goes to TINADALI  in trappy open handicap, the ex Irish gelding for D Weld now in the very capable hands of David O’Meara has good winning form over this trip and ran well in his prep for this only going down half a length at Ayr twelve days ago in a class 2.

To me this looks an excellent OAKS in prospect with the match up we have been looking forward to LOVE v FRANKLY DARLING, and it does look a two horse race. Love was impressive in the 1000 Guineas powering clear of the race and is sure to get the extra trip without doubt. Frankie is going for his 6th Oaks win today and has great partner to help him land this today and at the prices FRANKLY DARLING is the way to go on the back of her class run to land the Ribblesdale at Royal Ascot last time out with ENNISTYMON two lengths behind her and still looked as though she had plenty more left in the tank to give if needed. She looks every part a well balanced filly to handle this track.

Selection… FRANKLY DARLING 2/1

ONASSIS won in fine style at the royal meeting under the head turner Hayley Turner last out and Ryan Moore takes over today but this race requires a big leap forward to land this. FOORAAT (nap) will be a warm order favorite here and you can see why as the 3 year old bay filly made it two from two last out at Chelmsford and that was impressive making all. LOVE AND THUNDER will be one of two main threat to the selection but more will be needed after only landing a novice event last time out at Newbury. CLOAK OF SPIRITS is respected after finishing 5th in the Coronation and is a player dropping down in class today.

Selection… FOORAAT (nap) 15/8

This years Derby promises to live up to expectation as we have some class three years olds taking to the stage. Ryan Moore has decided to keep the faith with MOGAL who does come with a warning tag but on his day can serve it up at the top table and with Moore taking the ride it’s a tip in itself. KAMEKO the 2000 Guineas winner did that in style and Andrew Balding will be looking to emulate his father’s Derby win with MILL REEF and  holds very strong claims. Ed Walker too is looking to land his first Derby win with ENGLISH KING and there could be a new King crowned today as he won his Derby trial in good fashion at Lingfield showing a good turn of foot and nice balance and with the Frankie factor will head the market.

Cases can be made for some of the bigger priced runners such as HIGHLAND CHEIF, PYLEDRIVER, and VATICAN CITY but the selection this year goes to RUSSIAN EMPEROR as I was very taken with his run at the Royal meeting and he has improved leaps and bounds with every run, showing guts and determination. Wearing down First Receiver in the Hampton proved he will relish this trip and at a cracking price is the one to be on side with.

Selection… RUSSIAN EMPEROR e/w 7/1

Providing TINTORETTO can translate his all weather form to the turf and on a tough course like Epsom he looks like he has plenty more to offer and in the capable hands of the champion jockey Oisin Murphy who is clearly in fine form himself looks to be a great combination to take home the final prize of the meeting.

Selection… TINTORETTO e/w 13/2

ENABLE makes her long awaited return to the track at Sandown on Sunday in the Eclipse and all eyes will be on whether she can put her break behind her and hit the ground running but will have strong opposition from Ghaiyyath  and Japan . And I would be firmly in the camp of the Queen of fillies ENABLE who loves this track and has proved strong on a first run after a break and John Gosden is a very shrewd trainer especially with his older horses. Enable owes us nothing in what she has done for the game and punters but I would very much like to see her story continue in style and get to the Prix De L’arc in France at the end of the season unbeaten. So yes, there is some sentiment involved but she is the class horse in this renewal of the Eclipse.

The Queen of the track returns for Sundays Coral Eclipse and I am siding still with the Queen ENABLE 11/10. Be sure to catch her return to track at Sandown to add to a cracking weekend of racing!!!

Good luck let’s bring home the winners!!!
